Search "best Masai Mara safari packages" and you'll have forty browser tabs open in ten minutes — camps you've never heard of, prices that don't say what they include, and at least six lists all claiming to be the definitive one. We've spent years building exactly these trips for Indian travellers flying out of Delhi, Mumbai and Bengaluru, and the honest answer is unglamorous: there is no single best package, only the best package for the person booking it. A honeymooning couple and a family of five with a six-year-old shouldn't be booking the same itinerary, even if both trips are, technically, "a Masai Mara safari."

What actually separates a good package from a great one has very little to do with the marketing photos. It comes down to four things: how many nights you genuinely spend inside the Mara ecosystem rather than in transit, how small the camp is (fewer than twenty tents almost always means better sightings and better service), whether your vehicle is private or shared with strangers you didn't choose, and which add-ons — a dawn balloon safari, a private conservancy, a walking safari — are built into the price instead of upsold once you're at camp. Every package below is scored against those four things, not against how good the brochure looks.

What follows are six packages we actually run, chosen to cover six different kinds of traveller, with honest starting prices in INR and exactly what's included. If you'd rather see one of these unfold day by day, our 10-day Masai Mara itinerary walks through a full route morning by morning. And if none of the six below is quite right, treat this as a starting sketch — every itinerary here can be lengthened, shortened or rebuilt from scratch by a designer working in IST hours.

six ways to do it right

The best Masai Mara safari packages, one at a time

Each one below is a package we actually run — not a hypothetical comparison chart. Treat the starting price as a floor, not a ceiling; every detail here flexes around you.

chapter one — for most travellers

Guests on a private morning game drive through the Masai Mara, part of the Essential Mara safari package
a proper safari, kept lean on purpose
package onebest value

Essential Mara — the smartest first safari

Don't let "essential" fool you — this is still a fully private 4x4, a qualified naturalist and a proper tented camp, just without the extras that push prices up. Four days, three nights, two full days of drives, timed for the short dry season (December–February) when sightings are excellent and camps run their kindest rates of the year. It's the package we point budget-conscious first-timers to when they ask "what's the least I can spend and still get it right?" — because a smaller camp with a great guide beats a fancier one with a rushed schedule, every time.

Classic Mara — the one most people actually book

This is the package that shows up first when you search for the best Masai Mara safari packages, and for good reason — five nights is long enough to catch a river crossing in season, sleep off jet lag, and still have a spare day for bad weather without losing the trip. Private vehicle and naturalist throughout, a boutique camp of twenty tents or fewer, one bush breakfast, and a sundowner drive built into the itinerary rather than charged as an extra. If you've never been and don't yet know what you'll love most about the Mara, this is where to start.

from — ₹2,65,000 per person, twin sharing · 6 days / 5 nights

chapter two — for something more exclusive

A cheetah scanning the plains from a private lookout, part of the Conservancy Escape luxury Masai Mara safari package
a lookout that's yours alone
package threethe upgrade

Conservancy Escape — for travellers who've already done the main reserve

Six nights split between the reserve and a private conservancy on its border, where vehicle numbers are capped by contract and night drives and walking safaris — both banned inside the main Mara — are finally allowed. A dawn balloon safari with champagne breakfast is built in, not upsold, and camps here run under ten tents, so the same guide learns your names by day two. This is the package we recommend once someone tells us "we've already seen the Mara" — because a private conservancy is a genuinely different experience, not just a fancier version of the same one.

Mara for Two — built around exactly two people

Five nights in a camp that does private bush dinners properly — not a token table dragged into a clearing, but a full crew, lanterns, and a menu planned around what you told us at booking. Mornings are unhurried, drives are timed to avoid other vehicles at popular sightings, and the dawn balloon flight ends in a private champagne breakfast for two, not a shared table of eight. We've run this package for enough honeymoons and anniversaries to know the details that matter: a note left on the pillow, a cake that isn't a surprise you didn't ask for, and a camp team that reads the room.

from — ₹3,45,000 per person, twin sharing · 6 days / 5 nights

chapter three — for the people you bring with you

Wildebeest surging across the Mara River during the Great Migration, a highlight of the Family Safari package
the moment nobody in the vehicle stays quiet
package five

Family Safari — six nights, zero meltdowns

Built for children aged five and up: interleading or family tents so nobody's on a different floor, a Junior Ranger programme that turns downtime into actual fun, and drives that pause the moment attention does rather than sticking to a fixed timetable. We deliberately keep this to two camps instead of four, because young children travel better with fewer transfers, not more sightings ticked off a list. Six nights leaves enough slack for a rest afternoon by the pool without anyone feeling like the trip is rushed — parents tell us this is the one that actually feels like a holiday, not an expedition.

from — ₹2,95,000 per adult, twin sharing (kids priced separately) · 7 days / 6 nights

A golden sunset over the acacia-dotted plains of the Masai Mara, the farewell view before the Mara and the Coast package continues to the beach
bush first, then absolutely nothing to do
package six

Mara & the Coast — bush first, beach after

Five nights in the Mara followed by three unwinding on the Kenyan coast — Diani's white sand or Zanzibar's Stone Town, both a short hop from Nairobi. It solves the one real complaint about safari-only trips: that they end on an adrenaline high with nowhere to put it down. This package is popular with couples and small groups who want one holiday that covers both moods, and because the flights are pre-booked as a single routing, you lose almost no time to airports. Swap the coast leg for two nights in Nairobi and a spa day if flying twice is the part you'd rather skip.

the honest part

What the best Masai Mara safari packages actually cost

The prices above are per person, per trip. Here's the same information sliced a different way — by camp tier, per night — so you can see exactly where the money goes.

Mid-Range Camps

from₹26,000

per person, per night · fully inclusive

Comfortable tented camps of twenty to thirty tents, usually family-run or part of a small regional group, inside or just outside the main reserve. You still get a private 4x4 and a dedicated guide — we don't offer shared drives at any tier — but rooms are simpler and dining is set-menu rather than à la carte.

  • Private 4x4 + naturalist guide, no exceptions
  • Full board — all meals and standard drinks
  • Two game drives daily, morning and afternoon
  • Park fees included and pre-paid in INR

Private Conservancies

from₹68,000

per person, per night · fully inclusive

Exclusive-use camps of fewer than ten tents on private land bordering the reserve, where vehicle density is capped by contract and activities banned inside the Mara itself — night drives, walking safaris, off-road tracking — are finally allowed. This is the tier behind Conservancy Escape and most of Mara for Two.

  • Everything in Boutique Luxury, plus night drives
  • Walking safaris with an armed ranger
  • Off-road game tracking permitted
  • Typically 4–6 guests per vehicle, capped at camp level too

true of every package on this page

  • One dedicated travel designer, working in IST hours, start to finish
  • Private vehicles only — we've never run a shared game drive
  • All park and conservancy fees, quoted and paid in INR
  • Kenya eTA guidance and a full pre-departure documents pack
  • Free rescheduling up to 45 days before travel

not included, and why

  • International flights to Nairobi (we'll help you pick the routing)
  • Kenya eTA fee and travel insurance — mandatory, we guide you through both
  • Gratuities for camp staff and your guide
  • Spa treatments and select premium-cellar wines at some camps

timing

When to book the best Masai Mara safari packages

Availability on the good camps moves faster than price does. Here's when to lock in each package, not just when to travel.

Jul – Oct The Great Migration and river crossings. Classic Mara and Conservancy Escape sell out first at this camp size — book 6–9 months out, or the exact dates you want simply won't exist. book first
Dec – Feb Short dry season — golden light and the best cat sightings of the year, without migration-week pricing. Three to four months' notice is usually enough on any of the six packages. best value
Jun & Nov Shoulder weeks — quieter roads, green plains, and camps with time to spare for you. Mara for Two and Family Safari feel especially good here, and six to eight weeks' notice is often fine. quiet luxury
Mar – May The long rains. Some conservancy camps close entirely; Essential Mara can still be booked at short notice, at its lowest rates, if you don't mind the odd washed-out road. book with care

our designers' tip — travelling in Jun or Nov? Ask for Mara & the Coast or Conservancy Escape by name — camps that read as fully booked in August often have space in the shoulder months, and the rate for the exact same tent can drop by a third.

before you decide

The best Masai Mara safari packages, answered honestly

The questions we're asked most when guests are comparing packages. Anything else on your mind, your designer will answer directly.

For most first-time visitors, Classic Mara is the safest bet — five nights is long enough to catch a river crossing in season and recover from jet lag without the trip feeling rushed, and it sits in the mid-to-boutique price tier most people are comfortable with. If budget is the deciding factor, Essential Mara delivers the same private vehicle and naturalist guide over three focused nights instead.
Three nights is our practical minimum — enough for two full days of driving once arrival and departure are subtracted. Five to six nights, as in Classic Mara, Conservancy Escape or Family Safari, is the real sweet spot: it builds in a spare day for weather or a slow morning without cutting into actual game-drive time.
A private 4x4 with a dedicated naturalist guide, full board at camp, two game drives a day, all park and conservancy fees, and airport transfers in Nairobi. International flights, the Kenya eTA fee, travel insurance and gratuities are almost always quoted separately — treat any package that claims to include absolutely everything with a little suspicion.
For the July–October migration season, book six to nine months ahead — the smaller camps behind our top packages hold as few as ten tents and sell out early. For December–February, three to four months is comfortable. Shoulder months, June and November, are the most forgiving, sometimes bookable six to eight weeks out at noticeably better rates.
Every package on this page is a starting sketch, not a fixed itinerary. Popular changes: adding a Rift Valley lake on the way in, extending a conservancy stay by a night, or converting Mara & the Coast into a Nairobi-plus-spa finale instead of flying to the beach. Tell your designer what drew you to a package and what you'd change, and we'll rebuild it around that.
Yes, with the right package — Family Safari is built specifically for children aged five and up, with interleading tents, shorter and more flexible drives, and a Junior Ranger programme that gives kids something active to do between sightings. For children younger than five, a private villa stay is usually a better fit than a standard tented camp.

six packages, six kinds of traveller, one honest place to start.
