Most Masai Mara brochures are written as if every reader is flying out of Mumbai or Delhi. Bangalore travellers know better: there is no nonstop flight to Nairobi from Kempegowda International, so the whole shape of a good itinerary changes before you've even chosen a camp. Get the transit wrong and you burn a full day of your leave sitting in a connecting airport. Get it right, and a Masai Mara package from Bangalore costs you exactly one working week — door to door, jet lag included, and it's barely noticeable, since Nairobi sits only two and a half hours behind Bangalore.

We build a lot of these. What follows is the version we'd actually hand a friend from Koramangala or Whitefield who called asking where to start: which connection to book, how many days to block off, what a camp actually costs once the flight, the visa and the tips are added on top of the quoted land price, and a full day-by-day for the shortest itinerary we'd stand behind. If you have more than a week, the same routing logic carries straight into our full ten-day itinerary, which adds the Rift Valley lakes and Lake Nakuru before the Mara chapter begins.

Everything below is priced in INR, planned around Bangalore's actual flight options rather than a generic "fly to Nairobi" assumption, and built by a designer who works in IST hours — so a 10 pm call on a Tuesday is a completely normal way to finalise your dates.

the part nobody explains properly

Getting from Bangalore to the Mara itself

Kempegowda International has no nonstop service to Jomo Kenyatta. Here are the three connections we actually book, and how the Mara leg works once you land.

Via Mumbai

Air India

The route most of our Bangalore guests end up on. A late-night departure from BLR connects onto the Mumbai–Nairobi sector with a short layover, landing you in Nairobi in the early morning — you lose almost nothing to the transfer.

Total journey~9–10 hrsStops1

Via Doha

Qatar Airways

A comfortable alternative with a wide-body cabin for the long sector. Landing into Nairobi by late morning still leaves time to catch an afternoon light-aircraft hop straight into camp on day one, if your dates line up.

Total journey~10–12 hrsStops1

Via Dubai / Abu Dhabi

Emirates · Etihad

Similar timings to the Doha routing, useful if you already hold Emirates or Etihad miles, or want to break the journey with a night in the Gulf on the way out or back.

Total journey~10–13 hrsStops1

our routing rule of thumb — once you land in Nairobi, don't drive to the Mara: fly. A scheduled light aircraft from Wilson Airport takes about 45 minutes and buys back a full day of safari compared with the 5–6 hour road transfer. We book every guest on this leg as standard, whichever international route they've flown in on.

two ways to run it

Masai Mara packages, built from Bangalore

The difference between these is almost entirely the road: the Express flies straight to camp, the Complete spends three nights winding down through the Rift Valley lakes and Lake Nakuru first. The flight, the visa and the Mara chapter itself are identical either way.

the express, unrolled

Seven days, starting and ending in Bangalore

This is the shortest itinerary we'll put our name on. Treat every day as a setting, not a rule — camps, timings and add-ons all flex around you.

chapter one — the long way out

Nairobi, waiting on the edge of the bush
day one

Bangalore lifts off

Your flight leaves Bangalore in the evening, almost always with one stop — Mumbai on Air India, or a Gulf hub if you'd rather stack the miles. Either way you land in Nairobi with the morning still fresh, and a short transfer puts you in a garden hotel in Karen for a shower, a proper breakfast, and a few hours of sleep before the real journey starts.

stay — a garden hotel in Karen, Nairobi

day two

Wheels up for the Mara

A 45-minute hop from Wilson Airport does what eight hours on the Nairobi–Narok road cannot: it gets you into camp in time for lunch. The afternoon opens with a game drive that isn't so much scheduled as inevitable — something is always moving near camp at that hour — and you're back for sundowners before the light goes.

stay — a luxury tented camp, night one of four

chapter two — the Mara, uninterrupted

A cheetah scanning the plains from a lookout in the Masai Mara

day three

A full day with the cats

Your naturalist has the whole day and no other agenda. Dawn drive while the plains are still cool, breakfast under an acacia once the light turns properly gold, a lazy middle hour back at camp, then an afternoon spent following whichever pride or coalition the radio has found. Four nights in one camp means your guide learns your pace, not the other way round.

stay — same camp

day fourthe signature day

Up before the sun

4:30 am, and nobody minds. You rise silently in a hot-air balloon over hippo pools and grazing herds, watch the Mara go from grey to gold, and land to a champagne breakfast laid out in the middle of the plain. The rest of the day is yours — pool, spa, or one more short drive if something worth seeing turns up.

stay — same camp

Wildebeest surging across the Mara River during the Great Migration
the crossing, if the herds are here
day five

Crossings, or the version without them

Between July and October, this is spent parked at the river, waiting for the herd to find its nerve. Outside those months the day belongs to leopards in the riverine forest instead, plus a visit to a Maasai village — beadwork, a jumping contest you will lose, and stories told in two languages. Either way, it's your last night under canvas, and the crew tend to sing you out of camp.

stay — same camp, final night

chapter three — the long way home

Guests on a final morning game drive through the bush before flying back to Nairobi
one last look before wheels-up
day six

Back to the capital

One more sunrise drive before the short flight back to Nairobi, timed so you land with most of the afternoon still ahead of you. Spend it at the Sheldrick elephant nursery, or picking through the craft markets for the beadwork you didn't buy at the village. An airport-side hotel keeps tomorrow's transfer short.

stay — an airport-side hotel, Nairobi

day seven

Wheels down in Bangalore

A short transfer, one more long-haul sector depending on the route you flew out on, and you're home — a phone full of photographs, and very little patience left for anyone who says they've "always wanted to do a safari someday."

next — home, with the Mara still somewhere behind your eyes

the honest part

What it costs, Bangalore door to door

Most quotes show only the land package. Here's the full number for the 7-Day Express, per person, twin sharing — add the flight, the paperwork and the tips before you compare prices.

Land package — The Bangalore Express4 nights in camp, private vehicle, balloon safari, Nairobi nights from ₹1,85,000
Bangalore – Nairobi return flightEconomy, via Mumbai or a Gulf hub, booked 3–4 months out ₹1,10,000–1,60,000
Kenya eTAStandard processing, per traveller ₹3,000
Travel insuranceMandatory for entry, per traveller, 7–10 days of cover ₹2,000–4,000
GratuitiesCamp staff & guides, roughly $15–20/day, paid in cash ₹6,000–9,000
roughly, all in ₹3.05L–3.6L

International airfares swing hard with season and how far ahead you book — treat the range above as a planning number, not a quote, and ask your designer for the live fare before you commit dates. For the 10-day Complete, add roughly ₹25,000–35,000 to the land package; the flight, visa and gratuity numbers stay about the same.

pick your month

When to fly out of Bangalore

There's no bad month to be in the Mara — only different ones, and different pressure on your BLR–NBO connection. Here's the cheat-sheet we give every Bangalore guest.

Jul – Oct The Great Migration — the Mara at full volume. Lock your dates 6–9 months out; it's not just camps that sell out in peak season, connecting flights from Bangalore tighten up too. unmissable
Dec – Feb Short dry season, golden light, best-value camps of the year. Pairs neatly with a December school break if you're travelling as a family. the smart pick
Jun & Nov Shoulder weeks — quieter roads, emerald grass, and noticeably easier to find a good connecting fare on short notice. quiet luxury
Mar – May The long rains. Some camps close and roads get adventurous — we'd rather plan your beach extension for this window instead. we'd skip it

a small comfort — Kenya sits two and a half hours behind Bangalore, and there's no meaningful jet lag either way. Call your camp manager mid-morning IST and you'll catch them right after their own breakfast.

before you ask

Bangalore to the Mara, answered honestly

The questions we hear most from Bangalore travellers planning this route. Something else on your mind? Your designer will happily answer it.

No single flight does the whole run. There's no nonstop service from Bangalore to Nairobi at all — every option connects, most comfortably via Mumbai on Air India, or via Doha, Dubai or Abu Dhabi if you'd rather route through the Gulf. From Nairobi, the Mara itself is a further 45-minute light-aircraft hop or a 5–6 hour road transfer, and we always book the flight.
Seven is the shortest version we'll design well — one day each way for the journey, and four unbroken nights in camp so the trip doesn't feel like a long weekend with an eleven-hour flight attached. Ten days buys you the Rift Valley lakes and Lake Nakuru as well, and doesn't cost you any more travel time, since the international sectors are identical either way.
For the 7-Day Express, budget roughly ₹3.05–3.6 lakh per person, twin sharing — that's the land package from ₹1,85,000, plus the international flight, Kenya's eTA, mandatory travel insurance and gratuities, none of which most quotes include upfront. We total it out properly in the cost section above before you book anything.
Mumbai on Air India is usually the shortest total journey and the easiest to time against a Bangalore evening departure. A Gulf routing via Qatar Airways, Emirates or Etihad can work out cheaper or better-timed in certain seasons, and lets you add a stopover night if you want one — we check live fares on both before recommending either.
Yes — Indian passport holders need a Kenya eTA before they fly, applied for online, currently around $34 (about ₹3,000) per traveller. A Yellow Fever certificate isn't usually mandatory on a direct Bangalore–Nairobi routing since India isn't classified as a risk country, but immigration officers do sometimes ask for one, so we recommend getting the vaccine at least ten days before departure regardless.
Very easily. The most popular Bangalore add-ons are two or three nights in Diani or Zanzibar at the end, or swapping Lake Nakuru for Amboseli to add elephants under Kilimanjaro. Tell your designer what you'd like more or less of, and the route flexes around you.

one week from Bangalore, one very good reason for it.
