Why book Masai Mara safari packages from India, not a generic Kenya tour

If you have typed “Masai Mara safari packages from India” into a search bar, you are probably staring at a dozen open tabs — some quoting three days, some quoting sixteen, almost none quoting a number in rupees. This page is the one we wished existed when we first mapped this route for Indian travellers: real INR starting prices, what each package length actually buys you, and the parts of the trip — flights, the Kenya eTA, a vaccination certificate nobody mentions until the last minute — that have nothing to do with the safari itself but decide whether the whole plan comes together.

The short version sits in the box below. The long version is everything that follows: six package tiers broken down by what each one includes, then the practical side of booking from an Indian city so you can plan with your eyes open rather than finding out about the yellow fever certificate the week before you fly.

quick answer

Masai Mara safari packages from India start around ₹1,45,000 per person for a compact five-day trip and climb toward ₹4,75,000 or more for a ten-to-twelve day, peak-season, fully private itinerary. Most packages include a private 4x4, a naturalist guide, park fees and camp stays; international flights, the Kenya eTA and gratuities are usually billed separately. Scroll down for the full breakdown by tier, or jump straight to what each package costs.

the lineup

Six Masai Mara safari packages from India, and who each one suits

These are the tiers we actually sell, not a marketing wishlist. Durations, camps and add-ons all flex around your dates — treat this as a starting shape, not a fixed menu.

A private safari vehicle paused for an elephant crossing the road into the Masai Mara
short leave, big payoff
under a week

The Quick Getaway

Built for the traveller with exactly one week of leave and not a day more. You land in Nairobi, transfer straight to a garden lodge for the night, then fly into the Mara the next morning — skipping the Rift Valley lakes entirely so almost every remaining hour goes to game drives. It trades breadth for depth: three full days inside the reserve, a guide who already knows where last week's pride denned, and a return flight timed so you're back at your desk on Monday.

Flamingos lining the shore of Lake Nakuru National Park, a stop on several Kenya safari packages from India
rhinos and flamingos, in one detour
first safari pick

The Kenya Classic

The package we recommend most often to someone booking their first-ever safari. Two nights bracket Nairobi and Lake Nakuru National Park — rhinos, flamingos and Rothschild's giraffes in one compact reserve — before four unhurried nights inside the Masai Mara itself. It answers the question every first-timer asks without saying it out loud: is one park really enough? By day three you'll know the answer is a happy no, and you'll still have four full days left to enjoy it.

Giraffes and zebras grazing on Crescent Island by Lake Naivasha, part of the Grand Ten route
the full Rift Valley route
our most booked

The Grand Ten

The full Rift Valley route, unrolled properly: Nairobi, a boat safari and a walking day at Lake Naivasha, the rhinos of Lake Nakuru, and finally four nights deep in the Mara. It's the version most families and couples choose once they see the whole route laid out, because no single day feels rushed and the journey home is a short flight, not a day of driving. We've written this one out in full, day by day — read the ten-day itinerary.

A cheetah scanning the plains for herds moving through during the Great Migration
timed for the crossings
Jul–Oct only

The Migration Special

Built around one non-negotiable: watching a river crossing with your own eyes, not on someone else's reel. We trim the lake stops to buy an extra night at the Mara River, split across two camps positioned on opposite crossing points so your guide can chase whichever herd is closest to committing that morning. Best booked six to nine months ahead — the handful of camps with a genuine river view sell out first, every single year.

honeymoon favourite

The Luxury Escape

For the trip that's also marking something — a wedding, an anniversary, a decade of putting off the safari you promised each other. Five nights split across two private conservancies where camps cap at a dozen tents and vehicle numbers are capped too, a dawn balloon flight with a champagne breakfast laid out in the bush, and a spa tent for the afternoon you decide the pool can wait.

Zebras grazing in Nairobi National Park with the city skyline in the haze behind, the first stop on family safari packages from India
built to bend around your group
built for groups

The Family & Group Package

For families spanning three generations, or a friend group too large for a standard vehicle, this one bends the route around you instead of the other way round. Run from an exclusive-use villa or a dedicated block of interleading tents with your own vehicles and guides, it flexes to eight, ten or twelve days depending on how much of Kenya you want to see, with a Junior Ranger programme to keep the youngest members occupied between drives.

booking logistics

Booking from India: flights, the eTA & the paperwork

None of this is about the safari itself, and all of it decides whether the trip actually happens on schedule. Here's the order we walk every guest through.

1

Pick your route in

Mumbai has direct flights to Nairobi, making it the shortest way in from India. From Delhi, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad and most other metros, one-stop connections via Dubai, Doha or Addis Ababa typically land you at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in ten to twelve hours all-in, followed by a short scenic flight or a road transfer on to the Mara itself.

2

Apply for the Kenya eTA

Since January 2024, Kenya has replaced its visa stamp with an Electronic Travel Authorisation. Every traveller — adults, children and infants alike — applies online through the official Kenyan government portal before boarding; there is no visa-on-arrival option, so this has to be sorted well before you leave, not at the airport.

3

Book the yellow fever certificate

This is the one that catches people out. Indian nationals travelling to Kenya are required to carry a valid Yellow Fever Vaccination Certificate, taken at least ten days before departure from a government-approved centre — and you'll be asked for it again on the way back into India, not only on arrival in Nairobi. Book this the same week you confirm your travel dates.

4

Sort your money

The Kenyan Shilling is the local currency, but most camps and lodges bill in US Dollars. We quote your entire land package in INR upfront, so the only currency decision left is how much USD or KES cash to carry for tips, curios and the odd extra drink.

5

Pack for two climates in one day

Neutral-coloured layers, a wide-brim hat, and a proper zoom lens if you have one. Mara mornings sit around 12–15°C even when afternoons climb past 28°C, so a light fleece for the pre-dawn game drive earns its space in the bag.

pick your month

When to book your Masai Mara safari from India

There's no bad month to be in the Mara — only different ones, and different lead times for booking from an Indian departure city.

Jul – Oct The Great Migration and its river crossings — the Mara at full volume. From India, book six to nine months out; the finest camps hold as few as twenty tents. unmissable
Dec – Feb A short dry spell with golden light, easy cat sightings on the shorter grass, and the best camp rates of the year. smart value
Jun & Nov Shoulder weeks — emerald grass, newborn impalas, thinner crowds, and camp staff with time to spare for you. quiet & green
Mar – May The long rains. Some camps close for maintenance and the roads get adventurous — better spent as a beach add-on than a first safari. skip, or extend

our designers' tip — booking a Masai Mara safari package from India for July through October? Confirm your dates the moment your leave is approved. River-facing camps run a fraction of the Mara's total tents, and they are always the first thing to sell out.

before you ask

Masai Mara safari packages from India, answered honestly

The questions we hear most from guests planning this trip. Something else on your mind? Your designer will happily answer it.

Land packages — everything once you're in Kenya, including a private vehicle, camps, park fees and meals — start around ₹1,45,000 per person for a compact five-day trip and rise to roughly ₹4,75,000 or more for a ten-to-twelve day, peak-season, fully private itinerary. International flights from India, the Kenya eTA and gratuities sit outside these figures; budget roughly ₹55,000–₹90,000 more per person for a round-trip flight, depending on your departure city and season.
Mumbai has direct flights to Nairobi, making it the shortest route in from India. From Delhi, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad and other metros, one-stop connections via Dubai, Doha or Addis Ababa typically get you to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in ten to twelve hours all-in, followed by a short scenic flight or a road transfer on to the Mara itself.
Yes, but not the traditional kind. Since January 2024, every Indian traveller — adults, children and infants alike — must hold an approved Electronic Travel Authorisation (eTA) before boarding, applied for online through the official Kenyan government portal. There's no visa-on-arrival, so this has to be sorted before departure, not at Nairobi's airport.
For travel between India and Kenya specifically, yes. Indian nationals are required to carry a valid International Certificate of Vaccination against Yellow Fever, taken at a government-approved clinic at least ten days before you fly, and you'll be asked to show it again on your way back into India — so it's worth booking the same week you confirm your travel dates.
Once you account for the flight and a buffer night in Nairobi on both ends, five days is the realistic minimum for a satisfying safari, and seven to ten days is the range we recommend to most first-time travellers — long enough to add Lake Nakuru or a private conservancy without turning the trip into a marathon.
Booking each camp, transfer and park permit separately usually costs more once you add up individual airstrip transfers and per-night vehicle hire, and it leaves you coordinating logistics across a time zone. A packaged itinerary consolidates all of that into one INR quote and one point of contact, which is where most of the practical savings — and the peace of mind — actually come from.
