Search for masai mara safari packages from Nairobi and you will get fifty tabs that all promise the same thing: lions, a sunset and a tidy price. What none of them explains is the decision that shapes the entire trip — how many nights you give the Mara, and how you get there from the capital.
We plan these journeys for Indian families and couples every week, so this guide is written from that side of the desk. Prices are in rupees, pick-ups are from Nairobi (Karen, the airport or Wilson), and the advice is blunt about where a shorter package saves you money and where it quietly costs you the best part.
The short answer: two nights is a taster, three is the real minimum, and five is where the Mara stops feeling like a schedule. Everything below is built on that.
The packages, at a glance
Every option is private — your own 4x4, your own naturalist, camps of twenty tents or fewer. Prices are per person, twin sharing, and start from the figures below.

Leaving Nairobi: road or flight?
The Masai Mara sits roughly 270 km west of Nairobi. By road that is five to six hours: tarmac to Narok, then a final stretch whose condition depends on the last rains. It is a proper Kenyan road trip — escarpment views, tea stops, children waving from school gates — and it is also a day of your holiday.
The alternative is a scheduled light aircraft from Wilson Airport, about 45 minutes to a Mara airstrip, where your guide is already waiting on the gravel. The trade-off is a soft-bag luggage limit, usually around 15 kg per person, so pack accordingly.
- 3–4 day packages: fly both ways. Six hours on the road eats a third of a short trip.
- 5–7 day packages: drive in through the Rift Valley, fly back. You see the country and keep your last afternoon.
- Travelling with under-sixes or grandparents: fly, whatever the length.

Each package, honestly
3 days — Mara Express
Fly in on day one, take an afternoon drive, spend the whole of day two with the cats and fly out on day three. It works as an add-on to a Nairobi business trip or as a first look for hesitant travellers. It does not forgive bad luck: you get roughly four game drives, so a rainy morning matters.
4 days — Mara Classic
One extra night turns a taster into a safari. You can add a dawn balloon flight without sacrificing a drive, and there is room for a Maasai village visit. For most working couples on limited leave, this is the sensible middle.
5 days — Mara Deep-Dive our pick
Four nights lets you split the Mara: two days on the main reserve plains and river, then a conservancy where fewer vehicles are allowed at each sighting. You also get the scenic drive out of Nairobi and a flight home. If someone asks us for one recommendation, this is it.
7 days — Migration Week
Lake Naivasha first — a boat among hippos and a walk on Crescent Island — then four nights in the Mara timed for the Mara River crossings between July and October. The lakes also give children a break from long game drives.
10 days — Kenya Grand Ten
Adds Hell’s Gate, Lake Nakuru’s rhinos and a slower rhythm. We wrote up every day of it in our 10-day Masai Mara tour itinerary.

three questions to ask any operator — Is the vehicle private? Are park fees in the price? How many cars will share a sighting at my camp?
