Masai Mara Safari Packages: what to pick, what to pay, what to skip

Search for Masai Mara safari packages and you will meet pages of glossy itineraries that all look alike: a Nairobi pickup, a handful of game drives, a sundowner, and a lion photographed sometime in 2017. What separates a trip you retell for years from one that was merely fine hides in the small print — how many nights you sleep inside the reserve, whether the vehicle is yours alone, and how far the camp sits from the river.

This guide is what we tell guests on the first call. It compares the four private packages we run for travellers from India — 4, 6, 8 and 10 days — explains what each price covers, and says plainly which one we would book with our own money. Every figure is per person, twin sharing, in rupees, with park fees inside.

One honest caveat before we start: nobody can promise you a river crossing, a hunt or a leopard in a tree, and anyone who does is selling a brochure. What a good package can do is put you in the right place at the right hour for long enough that luck has time to turn up. If you would rather see the longest route in full, our 10-day Masai Mara tour, day by day is the template behind the Classic Ten below.

the quick answer

Private Masai Mara safari packages run from about ₹1,10,000 for four days to ₹2,95,000 for ten. Plan at least three nights inside the reserve, travel July–October for the Migration or January–February for value, and ask for a quote that lists every fee.

read the fine print

What a Masai Mara safari package actually includes

Two quotes with the same headline price can hide very different trips. This is the checklist we run every quote against.

normally inside the price

  • Full-board stay at a tented camp or lodge
  • A private 4x4 with a driver-guide or naturalist
  • Daily game drives, plus picnic breakfasts and lunches
  • Reserve or conservancy fees for every night you sleep inside
  • Airport pick-ups and the Nairobi–Mara flight, where the route uses one

normally charged on top

  • International flights to and from Nairobi
  • Kenya eTA fee and travel insurance
  • Hot-air balloon flight, unless the quote names it
  • Tips for guides, drivers and camp crew
  • Spa treatments and premium drinks

Indian passport holders apply for Kenya’s eTA online before flying, and the official eTA portal is the only place to do it. Insurance is not optional on our trips; it is the difference between a cancelled flight being an annoyance and being an expense.

depth over distance

How many nights do you really need in the Mara?

The most common mistake we see is choosing a package by total days. A ten-day itinerary with two nights in the Mara is a road trip with a cameo. What decides your wildlife is the number of game drives you get inside the reserve, and that follows the nights you sleep there.

match the trip to the traveller

Which package suits which traveller

First-timers with limited leave

Mara Express works if you can spare five or six working days and you are happy with a compact trip. If you can stretch to a week and a half, Mara Signature buys a whole extra day in the reserve for a modest step up, and that extra day is often the one people talk about afterwards.

Couples and anniversaries

Start from the Classic Ten and upgrade the camp, not the length. A private conservancy caps vehicle numbers, allows walking and night drives, and makes dinner feel like yours alone. The Grand Ten bundles all of that with the balloon flight.

Families with children

Children do better with variety than with distance. Boat rides, a walk among giraffes on Crescent Island and shorter drives keep attention up, which is how the 10-day route is built. For four people the Villa Ten adds a private chef and childminding team.

Photographers

Ask for five or more nights, a vehicle with bean-bag or clamp mounts, and a guide who will be at the river at first light. November and June give clean air and dramatic cloud; August gives drama of a different kind.

Migration chasers

Take the Migration Special, or the Classic Ten between July and October, and keep two spare mornings. Herds cross when their nerve allows, not when the itinerary says so, and some days are spent waiting. That waiting is part of it.

timing

The best time to book a Masai Mara safari package

There is no bad month for the Mara, only different ones. The season you pick moves your price more than the camp does.

Jul – OctMigration season. The herds usually arrive from the Serengeti in July and crossings tend to peak in August and September, though the river keeps its own schedule. Highest rates of the year, so book six to nine months out.peak, book early
Jan – FebHot, dry and short-grassed, so predators are easy to spot. Camps feel calmer than in August and prices soften noticeably.best value
JuneThe quiet stretch before the herds arrive. Lion, elephant and cheetah are all around, the grass is still green and rates have not yet climbed.underrated
Nov – DecThe short rains: brief afternoon showers, huge skies and very few vehicles. A photographer's month, and the one that holds Diwali in 2026.quiet and green
Mar – MayThe long rains. Heavy downpours, some camps shut and the roads turn to clay. We would put a beach holiday here instead.usually skip

travelling on Indian school holidays — late May still sits inside the long rains, so late June is the safer summer-break window. If your dates are fixed to the calendar, tell us early and we will build the trip around them.

where the money goes

What really moves the price of a package

Two itineraries that look identical on paper can sit far apart on price. Five things account for nearly all of the gap.

Season

Park fees and camp rates both climb from July to October and again around Christmas. Shifting a trip from August to June or January is the biggest saving available without changing the quality of the camp.

Where you sleep

A camp inside the main reserve costs less than one in a private conservancy, where a limited number of vehicles share the land and fees are higher. Whether that trade is worth it depends on how much you value quiet sightings.

Private or shared vehicle

Shared game drives are the reason some packages look cheap. You save money and give up control of the timetable.

How you get there

The road from Nairobi takes roughly five to six hours. A light-aircraft flight takes about 45 minutes and costs more, but it returns most of a day to you, which matters on shorter trips.

Add-ons

Balloon flights, spa treatments and premium drinks are usually extra. Decide on the balloon early, because it is the one add-on that can sell out.

a simple method

How to choose a Masai Mara safari package in five steps

1

Lock your travel month first

Season sets both the price and what you will see. Decide between Migration (July to October), the dry-season value window or the green season before you compare a single quote.

2

Count nights in the Mara, not days on the itinerary

Ignore the headline duration and ask how many nights you sleep inside the reserve or a conservancy. Three is the minimum; four gives you room for a balloon flight.

3

Choose the camp type

Small tented camps and private conservancies with capped vehicle numbers change the experience more than room size does. Ask how far the camp is from the Mara River.

4

Insist on a private vehicle

Your guide, your pace and a window seat for everyone. It is the single upgrade guests tell us they would repeat.

5

Get the quote itemised, in INR

Park fees, flights, balloon, tips and transfers should each appear as a line, with the exclusions written plainly.

what the brochures skip

Five things a package page won’t tell you

  1. The cheap package usually shares a vehicle. Six strangers in one van means one timetable and a vote on every sighting. It is fine as a first taste, and rarely what people picture when they imagine the Mara.
  2. “Masai Mara” is a big address. A camp on the reserve’s edge can be an hour from the river and the big cats. Ask how long the drive to the Mara River takes and which gate the camp uses.
  3. Three nights on paper can be two and a half in practice. You land after lunch, leave before breakfast and lose a drive at each end. Count game drives, not nights.
  4. The balloon is rarely in the base price. If a dawn flight matters, see that it is written into the quote and pencilled early in your stay, so bad weather still has a fallback morning.
  5. Park fees are set in dollars and change with the season. A low headline number often leaves them out. Ask for an itemised quote in INR that names every fee.

before you ask

Masai Mara safari packages, your questions answered

The questions we hear most from travellers planning a package from India.

Private packages from India start at about ₹1,10,000 per person for a 4-day fly-in trip. The 10-day Classic route with two Rift Valley lakes and Lake Nakuru is ₹2,95,000, and conservancy-and-balloon versions start at ₹4,45,000. All figures are twin sharing, in INR, with park fees, meals and a private vehicle included. International flights, insurance, tips and optional extras are separate.
Plan at least three nights inside the reserve, which usually means six or seven days door to door once Nairobi is counted. Four nights leaves room for a balloon flight and a weather buffer. Anything shorter tends to mean two rushed drives and a lot of travelling.
Most private packages cover full-board accommodation, a 4x4 with a driver-guide, daily game drives, park or conservancy fees and airport transfers. International flights, Kenya eTA fees, insurance, tips and extras such as the hot-air balloon are normally charged separately, so always ask for an itemised quote.
For the Great Migration, book six to nine months ahead for July to October. For January, February or June, three to four months is usually enough. The long rains from March to May are the weakest window for a first safari.
Private, if the budget stretches. A private vehicle lets you stay with a sighting, leave early for the river or skip a drive when children are tired. Shared vehicles run to a group timetable, which is exactly why they cost less.
Kenya uses an online eTA rather than a sticker visa. You apply on the official government portal before you fly, and we review each application before it is submitted. Comprehensive travel insurance is mandatory on all our journeys.
Yes. The most popular extension is two or three nights in Diani on the Kenyan coast, or a short hop to Zanzibar, after the bush. It works neatly because the Mara-to-Nairobi flight connects onward to coastal services.
Yes, from around five years old. Choose a package with variety, such as boat rides, a walking day and shorter drives, plus a private vehicle so the day can bend around naps and moods. The Villa Ten adds a nanny and chef for families of four.

the right package is the one that fits your dates.
