The Masai Mara Tour from India, Explained Properly

Flights, the Kenya eTA, when to fly, how many days to take, and exactly what it costs in rupees — everything we tell guests calling us from Mumbai, Delhi and Bengaluru, gathered into one page.

Ask a well-travelled Mumbai family why the Masai Mara turns out easier to visit than most people assume, and Nairobi's two-and-a-half-hour time difference from India is usually the second thing they mention — right after "the flight is shorter than Mumbai to London." For Indian travellers, Kenya sits in an unusually convenient spot on the map: wildlife at a scale nothing at home can match, reached on an overnight flight that barely disturbs the body clock, on a travel authorisation you apply for from your phone rather than queue for at a consulate.

This page is the version of that conversation we have on repeat with guests planning a Masai Mara tour from India — how to actually get there, what the Kenya eTA involves, when to fly, how many days to set aside, and what the whole trip costs in rupees once nothing has been left out of the number. It sits alongside our day-by-day 10-day Masai Mara itinerary, which walks through one specific route in full; this page is the planning layer underneath it, useful whichever length or company you eventually book with.

why here

Why an Indian Traveller Picks the Mara First

Kenya rarely tops a list of "obvious" international holidays from India, and yet the Masai Mara is quietly one of the easiest bucket-list wildlife trips an Indian passport can take. A few practical reasons keep coming up on our very first call with guests.

Barely any jet lag

Kenya sits at UTC+3 — a mere two and a half hours behind Indian Standard Time. Land after an overnight flight and your body has no real idea it left India; there's no lost recovery day at the start of the trip.

A phone application, not a passport-office queue

Since January 2024, Kenya's old visa stamp was replaced by the eTA — an online authorisation applied for from a laptop or phone in about twenty minutes, with no consulate visit required.

Direct metal from home

Three airlines fly nonstop between Mumbai and Nairobi, so "connecting through Europe" is no longer part of the sentence for most Indian travellers planning this trip.

A safari that meets you halfway

Kenyan guiding culture tends to suit first-time Indian safari-goers unusually well — patient, fluent English, and a vegetarian thali arranged without fuss at nearly every camp on the well-travelled routes.

the route

Getting from India to the Masai Mara

Every Masai Mara tour from India happens in two legs: an international flight into Nairobi, then a much shorter domestic hop or drive on to the Mara itself. There's no single flight that does both.

The international leg

  • From Mumbai — IndiGo, Air India and Kenya Airways all operate nonstop service to Nairobi, roughly six hours in the air, comparable to a Mumbai–Frankfurt sector but landing in Africa instead of Europe.
  • From Delhi, Bengaluru or Chennai — there's no direct service yet, so the practical choices are a short domestic connection through Mumbai to catch the nonstop, or a one-stop routing via Doha (Qatar Airways) or Dubai (Emirates or flydubai), both of which land in Nairobi at sensible hours.

The domestic leg, Nairobi to the Mara

  • Fly-in — a light-aircraft hop of well under an hour on scheduled morning and afternoon flights, landing on one of the Mara's own airstrips a short drive from camp. The only sensible option on a trip of a week or less.
  • By road — five to six hours by private 4x4 through the Great Rift Valley, broken up with stops at Lake Naivasha or Lake Nakuru along the way. It only earns its place on a longer trip, which is exactly how our 10-day route uses it.
In practice — most Indian travellers book the international leg into Nairobi and let their ground operator arrange the domestic connection as part of the safari package, since Mara flight seats need to be matched to your camp and game-drive schedule.

The Kenya eTA: What Indian Passport Holders Actually Need

Kenya replaced its traditional visa stamp with an Electronic Travel Authorisation (eTA) on 5 January 2024. Every traveller needs one before departure, including infants — there is no exemption for Indian nationals.

How the application actually works

  • Apply only at the official government portal, etakenya.go.ke — third-party sites process the same application at a markup, and Kenyan immigration explicitly warns that applications submitted through unofficial sites can be refused.
  • You'll need a passport scan (minimum six months' validity, one blank page), a recent photo or selfie, your accommodation and flight details, and basic contact information.
  • The standard single-entry eTA costs roughly USD 30–35 (about ₹2,800–3,000, though this moves with the exchange rate — check the live fee on the portal before paying).
  • Processing is usually complete within three business days; we tell guests to apply two to three weeks before departure and never leave it to the final week.
  • Approval arrives by email as a PDF — print it and carry it with your passport, or save it in the official "Kenya Travel Authorization" app.
Worth knowing — the eTA fee is non-refundable even if an application is declined, so double-check every field — especially passport number and dates — before you submit.
paperwork, part two

Vaccinations, Malaria & the Certificate People Forget

This is the one piece of the puzzle that trips up otherwise well-prepared Indian travellers, because the requirement runs in a direction most people don't expect.

  • Going to Kenya: no yellow fever certificate is required on arrival, because India does not appear on Kenya's list of at-risk countries for that requirement.
  • Coming home to India: Indian health authorities require every traveller arriving from Kenya to carry a valid international Yellow Fever Vaccination Certificate. Skip it, and you may be pulled aside for an on-arrival vaccination at the airport in Mumbai or Delhi — not how anyone wants to end a safari.
  • The fix is simple: get vaccinated (or obtain a medical exemption letter) at an approved centre in India at least ten days before you fly out, so the certificate is already valid by the time you land back home.
  • Malaria: the Masai Mara sits in a malaria-risk zone. Speak to a travel doctor about prophylaxis four to six weeks before departure, and pack repellent plus lightweight long sleeves for dawn and dusk drives.
  • Insurance: comprehensive travel insurance with medical evacuation cover is expected practice for any East Africa safari, and worth arranging with a policy that explicitly names game drives and hot-air ballooning as covered activities.

Best Time to Go, Mapped to the Indian Calendar

There's no genuinely bad month to be in the Mara, but the right window for an Indian traveller often comes down to matching Kenya's seasons with the leave you actually have.

Jul–Oct The Great Migration and river crossings — peak season, and peak demand. Book 6–9 months ahead if this is timed around a Puja or Diwali break. unmissable
Dec–Feb Short dry season — golden light, easy cat sightings, and the year's best camp rates. Overlaps neatly with Christmas–New Year school holidays, so it books out early. the smart pick
Jun & Nov Shoulder weeks — quieter roads, emerald grass, and none of the calendar clash with peak Indian holiday clusters. quiet luxury
Mar–May The long rains. If summer holidays are your only window, aim for late May into June once the rains are easing, rather than the peak of the wet season. plan around it

How Many Days Do You Need?

This is usually the first real decision on a call, and it comes down to how much leave you have and whether the Mara is the whole trip or one chapter of a longer Kenya holiday.

What to Actually Pack from India

Most safari packing lists are generic. A few things are worth flagging specifically for travellers coming from India.

A Type G adapter

Kenya runs UK-style three-pin sockets at 240V, not India's Type C/D — pack at least one adapter, since tented camps often have only one socket per tent.

Neutral-coloured layers

Khaki, olive and sand for game drives, plus one warm layer for dawn starts — mornings are cooler than the daytime heat suggests.

Malaria prophylaxis & repellent

Along with any personal medication in hand luggage — checked bags occasionally get delayed on the domestic hop to the Mara.

Printed eTA & vaccination certificate

Kept with your passport, not buried in a checked bag — both get checked at more than one point on the journey.

A power bank

Many tented camps run on solar power and switch off generators between set hours — handy for topping up a phone or camera overnight.

Your own binoculars

Some camps keep a pair to lend, but a good personal set makes a real difference on distant cat and bird sightings.

the last step

Booking It Right

Everything above can be arranged independently, but a few things are worth knowing before you decide how to book.

Peak dates move fast

The best camps for July–October and Christmas–New Year hold as few as ten to twenty tents, and sell out six to nine months ahead.

A private vehicle matters

Shared game drives mean someone else's photography priorities decide when you move on from a sighting — worth confirming before you book.

Time-zone support helps

A designer working in IST hours avoids the 3 a.m. WhatsApp messages that come with booking directly through a Nairobi-based office.

Ask what's genuinely included

Park fees, gratuities and the Mara–Nairobi flight are the three line items most likely to be quietly left out of an attractive-looking headline price.

if it helps — this is exactly what our own designers build for guests calling from India: a private 4x4 throughout, camps of twenty tents or fewer, and every rupee accounted for before you fly. Tell us your dates and we'll draft it around them.

before you ask

Masai Mara from India, answered honestly

The questions Indian travellers ask most before booking. Something else on your mind? Your designer will happily answer it.

Not a visa in the old sense. Since January 2024, Kenya replaced its visa stamp with an eTA — an online travel authorisation you apply for before you fly, at the official portal etakenya.go.ke, for a processing fee of roughly USD 30 to 35. It typically clears within three business days, though it is worth applying two to three weeks before departure. Every traveller needs one, including infants.
It depends on trip length and camp category, but a realistic starting point is around ₹1,45,000 per person for a short four-day fly-in safari, rising to roughly ₹2,95,000 for a full ten-day Nairobi-to-Mara route, twin-sharing. International flights, the Kenya eTA fee and travel insurance usually sit outside a package price and are worth budgeting separately.
Seven days is the shortest length worth genuinely recommending — enough for a day either side of Nairobi and four proper nights in the Mara. Ten days allows the Rift Valley lakes and Lake Nakuru's rhinos to be added without any day feeling rushed, and is the length most first-time Indian travellers end up booking.
No — there is no airstrip in the Mara that takes international traffic. Every route goes from India to Nairobi first, nonstop from Mumbai on IndiGo, Air India or Kenya Airways, or one-stop via Doha or Dubai from other Indian cities, and then a short domestic leg — a light-aircraft flight of under an hour, or a five-to-six-hour drive through the Rift Valley — completes the journey to the Mara itself.
July through October, when the herds are typically crossing the Mara River, is also when camps and flights sell out furthest in advance, so Indian travellers aiming for this window should book six to nine months ahead. December to February is a strong, less-booked alternative, with easier dry-season game viewing and better camp rates.
Not to enter Kenya — India is not on Kenya's list of at-risk countries, so travelling directly from India, a certificate is not required at Nairobi's airport. The return leg is the catch: Indian health authorities require a valid yellow fever certificate from anyone arriving from Kenya, so it is worth getting vaccinated at least ten days before leaving India to avoid a vaccination counter at the airport on the way home.
