Anyone searching for a Masai Mara tour package from India has already seen the photographs: a lioness on a termite mound, a wildebeest column snaking towards the river. What the photographs don't tell you is everything around them. How many days is enough? What does ₹3 lakh actually buy in Kenya? Is the visa a headache, and which month makes the trip worth the money? This guide answers those questions in the order Indian families and couples ask them.

We plan these journeys every week from desks running on IST, so the advice is practical rather than poetic: real rupee figures, flight routes that work from Indian cities, what to do about vaccinations, and the mistakes we see most often. Booking the wrong month is the big one. Read it top to bottom, or jump to the part you need.

the short answer

A private Masai Mara tour package from India costs roughly ₹1,65,000 to ₹4,45,000 per person, twin sharing, for five to ten days on the ground, before international flights. First-timers do best with seven days and four nights inside the Mara, travelling July–October or December–February. You will need a Kenya eTA, travel insurance and, in practice, a yellow fever certificate.

What a Masai Mara tour package from India should include

Two agents can quote the same trip and differ by ₹80,000 because one hides half the costs. Use this as your checklist before you compare prices.

should be in the price

  • Every night's stay, in small camps of about twenty tents or fewer
  • A private 4x4 with a naturalist guide, never a shared minibus
  • All meals, with vegetarian or Jain cooking arranged in advance
  • Park and conservancy fees, plus airport and Nairobi transfers
  • The Nairobi to Mara flight, which saves a five-to-six-hour road
  • A named planner reachable in Indian hours

usually charged on top

  • International flights from your Indian city to Nairobi
  • The Kenya eTA fee and comprehensive travel insurance
  • Tips for guides and camp staff
  • The hot-air balloon flight, unless the package names it
  • Spa treatments, premium wines and laundry at some camps

Which length is right for you?

Choose the five-day version only if leave is genuinely tight. It gives you three nights in the reserve, enough to see lions, elephants and probably a cheetah, but not enough to wait out a river crossing. The seven-day plan is what we recommend to most first-time Indian visitors: a night by Lake Naivasha lets the trip warm up before four nights in the Mara, which is where a safari earns its money.

The ten-day route adds Hell's Gate, a walk among giraffes at Crescent Island and Nakuru's rhinos. It suits families with children and anyone who wants more than one kind of Kenya. We have written that one out day by day in our 10-day Masai Mara tour itinerary.

the honest part

Masai Mara tour cost from India: where the money goes

Most of a Masai Mara tour package price is three things: where you sleep, how private your vehicle is, and when you travel. Park fees are a fixed line that rises in peak months, and the flight from Nairobi is the smaller one. Everything else is detail. Here is what actually moves the total.

The five levers

  1. Camp tier. A tented camp in the main reserve and a private conservancy camp can differ by ₹1 lakh or more across a stay, mostly because conservancies cap the number of vehicles.
  2. Season. July to October and the Christmas fortnight carry peak rates. The same camp in February can be far kinder to your budget.
  3. Private or shared vehicle. Shared minibuses look cheaper on paper and cost you the sighting when the group wants to leave.
  4. Length of stay. Nights three and four in the Mara are the best value on the trip; the fixed costs of getting there are already paid.
  5. Add-ons. Balloon flight, star-bed night, photography guide. Decide before you book, since camps sell out of balloon seats.

Budget beyond the package

Set aside money for return flights (fares swing widely, so watch them from the day you fix your dates), the eTA fee, insurance, and tips. Guides and camp crews rely on tips, and carrying small US dollar notes is the simplest way to give them. On a family trip, it is wise to keep roughly a tenth of the package cost aside for these extras.

Best time for a Masai Mara safari from India

Kenya has two rainy seasons and two dry ones, and Indian holiday calendars collide with them in awkward ways. Here is how they line up.

Jul – OctGreat Migration and river crossings. Book six to nine months ahead; peak-season rates apply. Diwali week, when it falls in this window, is late in the season and noticeably calmer.unmissable
Dec – FebShort dry season with golden light and easy cat sightings. Expect peak prices only around Christmas and New Year.the smart pick
Jun & NovShoulder months with green grass, newborn antelope and few vehicles. June suits families on the Indian summer break.quiet luxury
Mar – MayThe long rains. Some camps close and roads turn muddy. May is when many Indian schools close, so resist the temptation.we'd skip it

the planner's tip — on the June school break? Ask for a camp in a private conservancy. The grass is short, the cats stay close to camp, and you'll share sightings with very few vehicles.

the paperwork, made plain

Before you fly: eTA, vaccines, flights and money

Kenya eTA for Indian passport holders

Indian travellers apply online for an electronic travel authorisation before departure. You upload your passport, a photo, your itinerary and proof of accommodation, which your planner can supply. Your passport needs at least six months of validity. Apply only through the official portal, etakenya.go.ke, and check current fees there, because unofficial lookalike sites charge more.

Vaccines and insurance

Have a yellow fever shot at least ten days before travel and keep the certificate with your passport, since Indian health rules have asked returning travellers from Kenya to show it. Ask your doctor about malaria prevention too. Comprehensive insurance with medical evacuation cover is not optional on a trip where the nearest hospital can be a flight away.

Flights from India

Nonstop flights operate between Mumbai and Nairobi, taking about seven hours. From Delhi, Bengaluru, Chennai, Kolkata and Hyderabad most people connect via Mumbai, the Gulf or Addis Ababa. Book flights after your camps are confirmed, and pick an arrival that lets you sleep in Nairobi rather than rushing to the airstrip.

Money, plugs and phones

Kenya uses the three-pin Type G plug at 240V, the same as the UK, so pack an adapter. Cards work in Nairobi and larger camps, but carry small US dollar notes for tips. An eSIM or local SIM costs far less than Indian roaming, though signal in the Mara comes and goes, which is half the charm.

Food

Vegetarian and Jain travellers eat well on safari. Tell your planner at booking and the camp kitchen cooks accordingly, including bush breakfasts and picnic lunches.

How to book a Masai Mara tour package from India

1

Fix your dates

Match school holidays or leave to the seasons: July–October for the migration, December–February for value. Avoid May.

2

Choose length and camp tier

Five, seven or ten days; small luxury camp, private conservancy or exclusive-use villa. This decides most of the price.

3

Get a written INR quote and hold

Ask for a line-by-line quote in rupees. Good planners hold space provisionally for 72 hours while you decide.

4

Apply for the eTA and buy insurance

Apply online with a passport valid for six months or more, and buy comprehensive travel insurance that covers medical evacuation.

5

Book international flights last

Only after camps are confirmed, so a date change never strands a non-refundable ticket. Mumbai–Nairobi is the simplest routing.

6

Vaccinate, pack, fly

Yellow fever shot at least 10 days out, neutral-coloured clothes, a Type G adapter, and a light jacket for dawn drives.

Five mistakes Indian travellers make on a Mara trip

  1. Buying flights first. A confirmed ticket to Nairobi means nothing if the camp you wanted is full that week. Lock the camps, then book the flight.
  2. Going in May. It matches the school holidays and the heaviest rains. June is a better bet.
  3. Trying to do it in three days. With flights, transfers and the first-day fog of travel, two game drives are all you get. Four nights in the Mara is what pays off.
  4. Choosing a shared vehicle in peak season. When a lion kill happens, your group has one vote among many. A private 4x4 means you stay as long as you like.
  5. Underestimating the road. Nairobi to the Mara is five to six hours each way. The short flight is worth every rupee, particularly with children or grandparents.

before you ask

Masai Mara tour package from India, answered honestly

The questions Indian travellers ask us most. Something else on your mind? Your planner will happily answer it.

A private, small-camp Masai Mara tour package from India starts at about ₹1,65,000 per person for 5 days and ₹2,95,000 for the full 10-day route, twin sharing. That covers stays, meals, park fees, a private 4x4 with a naturalist and the Mara–Nairobi flight. International flights from India, the Kenya eTA, insurance and tips are extra, and July–October and Christmas cost more.
Kenya has replaced visas with an online electronic travel authorisation (eTA) for most visitors, and Indian passport holders apply for it before departure. Your passport should be valid for at least six months, and it is safest to apply two to three weeks ahead. Rules and fees change, so confirm them on the official portal, etakenya.go.ke, before paying anyone.
For the Great Migration river crossings go between July and October, with August and September the busiest. December to February is the smart alternative: a short dry season, good big-cat sightings and lower rates. June and November are quiet shoulder months, while March to May is the long rains, when we would not book a first safari.
Five days is the minimum that works: one night in Nairobi and three in the Mara. Seven days is the sweet spot for most Indian families and couples, adding a Rift Valley lake before four nights in the Mara. Take ten days if you can spare them and want lakes, rhinos at Nakuru and no rushing anywhere.
Yes. Every drive is private, so the pace follows the slowest person in the vehicle, and we fly between Nairobi and the Mara instead of taking the five- to six-hour road. Children of five and above enjoy it most. Grandparents should carry regular medication in hand luggage and check with their doctor before the long-haul flight.
Yes. Camps cook to order and can prepare vegetarian, Jain, vegan and halal meals when they know in advance. Tell your travel designer at booking and it goes onto the camp kitchen brief, including bush breakfasts and picnic lunches.
No, so you can use fares or miles you already like. Nonstop flights operate between Mumbai and Nairobi (roughly seven hours); from Delhi, Bengaluru, Chennai, Kolkata and other cities you usually connect through Mumbai, the Gulf or Addis Ababa. Schedules change, so check before booking. Kenya is 2 hours 30 minutes behind IST, so jet lag is minimal.
Vaccination is strongly recommended for Kenya, and Indian health rules have required travellers returning from Kenya to show a valid yellow fever certificate. Get the shot at least 10 days before you fly, and ask your doctor about malaria prevention. Requirements can change, so confirm with your airline and a travel-health clinic.
